What is Nearpod?
Nearpod is an app that you can get from the iTunes AppStore for free. Then you create your account for free. The free version gives you access to Nearpod but only a limited numbers of the benefits.
Nearpod is an interactive multimedia presentation tool. You can put slides of content in, videos, quizzes, websites into your presentation (NPP) that you put online. Then your students log into Nearpod on their iPads and use the Pin to get to your lesson.
There are 3 different versions available. Silver which is free and gives you 30 students and 50 MB of storage. You have access to Slide, Poll, Q&A, Quiz, Video and Draw tools.
Gold is the next level and it costs $10.00 a month per teachers, students are free and you will be able to have 50 students per session. You will have all of the basic features (Slide, Poll, Q&A, Quiz, Video and Draw it) and extended features (Slide Show and Browse the Internet) that you can use in your NPP. You get 1 GB of storage.
The School Version gets you everything above and sooo much more. The cost of the school version is based on how many teachers you have subscribed. You must have at least 5 teachers. You get 3 GB of storage per teacher. You can have up to 100 students in a session. You also get the School Library which allows teachers to share NPP between each other. You can also use a web browser to access the NPP if you don’t have enough iPads. You can also get your reports as a PDF or a CSV file. With the School Edition, you get a manager account that can manage all of the teacher accounts.
Nearpod homework is also a feature that the School Version and Gold get. Now students can work through Nearpod Presentations at their own pace. Teachers can review detailed reports of each students’ homework assignment. You can send NPPs to students to do as homework and it grades it for you.

Edcanvas is one if my favorite new tools. Teachers and students can use this simple, yet powerful Web 2.0 tool to organize and share content with anyone in a visually pleasing format. The "canvas" part of Edcanvas is where you arrange videos, links, images, and files around any topic of your choosing. Edcanvas has built-in search tools so that you do not have to leave your Edcanvas account in order to locate resources. Teachers can set up classes, enroll students, then track each student's progress though a presentation, including time spent on each slide, comments, and even share quizzes.

I really like Edcanvas as a tool for flipped classrooms. One of the most common questions I have heard from teachers who are curious about flipped classrooms is, "How do I know if students have watched the video?" With Edcanvas, you can track student progress and even give assessments to check for their understanding of the content. We have also been using Edcanvas in conjunction with our new LMS, Canvas by Instructure with great results. We'll be talking more about Canvas at the conference and on this blog. Stay tuned.
TED (http://www.ted.com) stands for Technology, Entertainment, & Design -- three broad subject areas that are, collectively, shaping our future. TED is a collection of riveting talks by remarkable people and are free to the world. In classrooms, TED talks add inspiring introductions to core curriculum topics and bring traditional lessons to life. Teachers can utilizeTED.ED resources for flipping video use in their classroom, browse playlists of already curated collections, and use talk “tags” to easily find resources to enhance student learning, and explore mobile app alternatives.

I just returned from FlipCon13 – the national Flipped Learning conference – and my mind is still reeling from all the ideas that were shared. I met some amazing educators, many of whom I had only been in contact with online this past year.
As I met my online friends in person and made some new friends, we discussed our stories and why we decided to flip our classes. Here are some of the reasons I heard:
These are just some of the many reasons educators decide to flip their classrooms. If you are considering flipping, or are maybe unsure about giving it a shot, ask yourself this: what is really the best use of your time with your students? If you can, with the use of video, articles, simulations, or other media, shift the focus of your classtime away from lecture and towards more engaging learning experiences, then I say:

This week we are launching the Flip'In Utah conference website. My background is in the Elementary setting, but I heard about this Flipping the Classroom concept and I have to say- it's an exciting education development. This concept has been tried in classrooms across the country and by some teachers in our own Canyons District. We're excited to bring this idea to more teachers and show the benefits of this classroom practice in meeting the varied cognitive student needs.
The basic premise of this idea is that the area of instruction that would be traditionally lecture is recorded and the students would view it BEFORE coming to class. Class time, instead of being teacher-led whole class instruction would then be devoted to APPLICATION of the learning that occurred in the lecture/lesson that was recorded and viewed before coming to class. The content that would have been traditionally homework practice is done in class and the instruction that was traditionally done in class is done at home. Thus, the classroom practices are "flipped".
What makes this concept possible is the use of technology. Internet access provides an avenue for students to view the lecture/lesson and participate in discussions with peers and instructors using the Web 2.0. Because of the incredible technological innovations that have happened in the past few years, the teacher can record content in one place and easily distribute it to students via a website/blog/or LMS (Learning Management System). No need to hand each student a VHS tape of the day's content! There are many ways to disseminate the content to class. It is as important to keep teaching and instruction current and novel in a flipped classroom setting as it is in a traditional classroom. Fortunately there are many tools available that allow teachers to create interesting lessons that engage students in a variety of ways. Many of them are interactive as well. We will be using this Blog to share some of these tools which will be featured in further detail at our upcoming Flip'in Utah conference which will happen on August 5 & 6. We look forward to hearing ideas from educators who have used this concept in their teaching, or are interested in collaborating with other educators to learn how to try this approach with their students. The flipped classroom is a place where students have an opportunity to lead their own discussions and apply the things they know. The dream of a student-centered, more democratic classroom where students engage in conversations with one another about relevant academic concepts can happen by giving them more opportunity to engage with the content together. As this is our first year, I thought it would be helpful to share how all of this got started. In February of 2012, Sarah Carlson was interviewed by KUTV2 News about her experiences with a flipped classroom. Her story led to speaking engagements and guests from all over the state visiting her classroom at Brighton High School. It was during one of her presentations that the idea for this conference was born.
